QQTR Projects

Managers are always communicating with their teams about what needs to be accomplished, whether it’s an everyday task or a special project. It’s the manager’s responsibility to communicate clearly so there will be no confusion about what to do or disappointment when the task is completed.

MANAGEABLE provides a simple, easy-to-use format to help managers communicate clearly. Many people call this QQTR, but we add a few additional steps to help make the assignment even clearer.

  • Title: what needs to be done?
  • Context: why does this need to be accomplished?
  • Quantity: how many do you need?
  • Quality: how will the end result be judged?
  • Time: when will it be due?
  • Resources: what resources will the person have available?
Task titles are normally pretty straightforward: need sales, need to purchase a new piece of production equipment, need more employees.
Context is where you link the task to business goals/objectives: want to increase revenues, want to increase production, want to expand and grow the business.
Quantity is a numerical figure: $5 million in sales, one new piece of production equipment, 32 new sales employees.
Quality is the criteria that will be used to judge the end result: $5 million is sales at 38% gross margin, one new piece of production equipment that will increase production output by 100%, 2 new sales managers with 15 new sales reps each.
Time is the deadline: normally a calendar date, sometimes also with a specific time identified.
Resources are what’s needed to perform the task: people, technology, money, equipment.

When managers provide crystal-clear task instructions, they help their team members to meet or exceed their expectations. People know clearly what is expected, and there are no surprises at the end.
